My inspiration for creating Gilly:

 

Gilly is one of those fantastic characters who pops into the story of his own accord and promptly makes himself at home in the narrative. He was such a delight to create, with his friendly banter and affectionate back slaps. He's one of those kinds of people who always see the positives in life, no matter what circumstances he's facing. In an era where everyone is always so stiff and formal (especially in a naval setting), amiable Gilly injects a breath of fresh air into the story (though his superiors may not agree!)
